Kerala 10 Day Itinerary: The Complete Trip with an Alleppey Houseboat
Ten days is enough to experience Kerala slowly and completely — hills, wildlife, backwaters and beach — without rushing. Here's a relaxed day-by-day itinerary built around an Alleppey houseboat.
Day 1 — Arrive in Kochi
Settle in and explore Fort Kochi: the Chinese fishing nets, colonial streets, and a Kathakali performance in the evening. Overnight Kochi.
Day 2 — Kochi Sightseeing
Spice markets, Jew Town, cafés and galleries. A gentle start before heading inland. Overnight Kochi.
Day 3 — Kochi to Munnar
Scenic drive into the hills (about 4 hours) through tea country. Overnight Munnar.
Day 4 — Munnar
Tea estates, viewpoints and cool mountain air. Overnight Munnar.
Day 5 — Munnar to Thekkady
Drive to Thekkady (3-4 hours), gateway to the Periyar wildlife sanctuary. Spice gardens and a lake boat ride. Overnight Thekkady.
Day 6 — Thekkady to Alleppey Houseboat
Drive to Alleppey (about 4 hours) and board your private houseboat by noon. Cruise the backwaters, sunset and dinner onboard. Overnight on the water — the trip's highlight.
Day 7 — Alleppey
Check out at 9 AM, then enjoy the town — beach, market, a village canoe tour. Overnight in Alleppey or a backwater resort (see houseboat vs resort).
Day 8 — Alleppey to Varkala (or Kovalam)
Drive south to the cliffs and beaches of Varkala (about 3 hours). Overnight Varkala.
Day 9 — Beach Day
Relax on the beach, cliff-top cafés and sunset. Overnight Varkala.
Day 10 — Departure
Transfer to Trivandrum airport (about 1 hour) or back to Kochi for your flight home.

Is 10 days enough for Kerala?
Yes — ten days comfortably covers Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, an Alleppey houseboat and a beach, at a relaxed pace with time to actually enjoy each place.
How many nights on the houseboat in a 10-day trip?
One overnight is standard and fits neatly mid-trip. You can add a second night if you'd like more time on the water.
