Boat House vs Houseboat in Alleppey: Are They the Same Thing?

Searching for an Alleppey stay, you'll see two terms used interchangeably: "boat house" and "houseboat". If you're wondering whether there's a difference — there isn't. Here's the simple explanation.

They Mean the Same Thing

In Kerala, "boat house" and "houseboat" both refer to the same thing: a traditional kettuvallam boat converted into private floating accommodation that cruises the backwaters. "Boat house" (two words) is simply the phrasing many Indian travellers use, while "houseboat" is the more international term.

Why Two Terms Exist

"Houseboat" is the globally recognised word. "Boat house" became common in local and Indian English usage. Both describe a boat with bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, a deck and a crew — so whether you search "Alleppey boat house booking" or "Alleppey houseboat booking", you'll find the same experience.

What You Actually Get (Either Name)

• A private AC bedroom (or 1, 2, 3 bedrooms by boat size)
• All meals cooked fresh onboard
• An afternoon backwater cruise and an overnight stay
• A crew — captain, chef and helper
